Treatment with biologics in musculoskeletal medicine

Bozeman Sports Medicine stem cell injections by Dr. Erik Adams

Erik Adams MD, PhD
Musculoskeletal specialist

Frequently Asked Questions

Biologics use your own cells and protein growth factors to stimulate healing and limit inflammation. Once we began to understand the details of the healing process, we have sought ways to harness them to address injury and disease. We use platelets extensively at our clinic (platelet-rich plasma – PRP) for a wide variety of conditions. Platelets contain a rich variety of growth factors that are released when injected into an injury, and these growth factors guide the entire healing process. Other examples of biologics include signaling cells, which release a more complex array of proteins that guide healing and also control inflammation and tissue damage, and also growth factor preparations obtained from placentas in Cesarean births.
Dr. Adams first started treating with biologics in 2007. He has attended numerous conferences on their use and has been an invited presenter at many of those conferences. He is also a published osteoarthritis researcher at Montana State University.
With many injuries, especially in tendons and ligaments, there is an inadequate healing response or the tissue is taken down a degeneration pathway instead. Biologics are able to re-start the healing pathway. They are useful for tendinosis (previously called tendinitis), tendon tears, ligament tears, non-healing stress fractures, chronic nerve entrapments – basically any musculoskeletal or peripheral nerve injury, in which the healing response has been absent or inadequate.
If we are catching them early enough, the result is full healing, with a normal looking tendon or ligament, a normal appearing and normally functioning nerve, and importantly, the successful treatment of pain. Examples of conditions we treat with biologics are shown in the box to the right. We believe that simply masking the pain with drugs is an inappropriate approach to an injury and is certainly not going to give you your best life. We believe in healing, in restoration of full function. Everything we do is directed at this outcome.

Starting with the end in mind

Most important to us is your success and returning to the life you love. Several details are essential in achieving this result. Proper diagnosis is key and is surprisingly the element that is frequently skipped in traditional musculoskeletal care. Just like anything, if you don’t know what is wrong, you can’t fix it. Then there are details in the biologics injection process that need proper attention – accuracy of injection (we utilize ultrasound guidance on every procedure we do), sedation and anesthetic, nerve blocks to make the process easy for you, and proper aftercare. These all must be done properly to achieve an ideal outcome.

Testimonials

  • I cannot recommend Bozeman Sports Medicine highly enough. Dr. Adams and his practice is an extremely valuable asset to our community. I have been an exercise consultant and gym owner in the valley for 20 years and I have never received care from someone with his level of skill and expertise. Thank you, Dr. Adams and Erin!

  • For the last six years, I have been fortunate to be a patient of Dr. Adams. The damage to my muscles was extensive, and with each PRP treatment, my musculoskeletal system has improved and strengthened. I cannot fully express my appreciation for how Dr. Adams and Erin treat me as a teammate during my procedures and during the healing process. In seeing me as a partner in my medical journey, Dr. Adams takes the time not only to answer my questions thoroughly but also helps me understand both the damage and the healing process taking place. I feel fortunate to be a patient of Dr. Adams and consider his practice a transformative part of my life.

  • Dr. Erik Adams is truly an exceptional and skilled doctor! He successfully treated two different injuries using ultrasound guided nerve hydrodissection.
I experienced chronic nerve pain from one of my injuries for over 5 years and had been to 6 different doctors when I lived in another state, but was not able to find a doctor who was committed to provide a solution to relieve my chronic pain. I resorted to intensive physical therapy which was a tremendous help but the chronic throbbing, aching, and electrical shocks of pain never subsided. My physical therapist in Bozeman referred me to Dr. Erik Adams, whom I was skeptical to go see because of my history with the other doctors. After a few appointments with Dr. Adams, I knew I had finally found the right doctor. Dr. Adams was determined to find a solution to alleviate my chronic pain which is not what I have previously ever experienced with other doctors.
Dr. Adams is kind and calm, and generously gives his time. He is highly skilled in using guided ultrasound and has a superb knowledge of human anatomy. He explains in detail what his solutions are. Dr. Adams and his team are top notch and I’m incredibly grateful to them.
    Jill S.
